Autologous Fat Transfer
Takes fat from another site on your own body and injects it into the pitted area and elevates the depressed area, filling in the scar.
Facial Fillers
While dermal fillers are effective in wrinkle reduction and restoring volume to the face and lips, they also can help to minimize the appearance of certain acne scars by “plumping up” the indentations. As a result the scars aren’t as deep. There are numerous dermal fillers that can be used to treat acne scars: medical-grade liquid silicone, hyalruronic acid-based products and calcium-based products. The effects of some fillers last for months, others for years. The most appropriate choice of filler will depend on the type of scarring and the patient’s skin type and condition. Patients must also have their acne outbreaks under control since dermal injections are contraindicated for facial areas experiencing pain or inflammation, including pimples.
Subscision
Subcision is a surgical procedure used to treat scarring from acne or chicken pox. It can also be used for traumatic scar revision. A scar has a fibrous band at its base that causes the skin to adhere to the muscle. In subcision, a wire scalpel is used to undercut this fibrous band, which instantly elevates the base of the scar and minimizes its appearance. Subcision is performed under local anesthesia, and there may be some swelling and redness that will subside in a day or two. Punch grafts A hole is punched in the skin to remove the scar, which is then replaced with a skin graft (often from the back of the earlobe). Helpful for deep acne scars.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels also remove the top layer of the skin, allowing it to regenerate with a smoother, fresher surface of new skin. Peels have proven to be quite effective in removing scars caused by acne.
Dermabrasion
This is a resurfacing technique especially well-suited for deep skin defects such as acne scars and heavy wrinkles. The procedure involves mechanical sanding of the top layers of the skin and penetrates the skin more deeply than microdermabrasion. With dermabrasion, a new layer of skin replaces the abraded skin during healing, resulting in a smoother appearance. Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure that requires only local anesthesia. Patients usually feel a “brush-burned” sensation for a few days after treatment, which can be minimized by using special dressings that let moisture and air reach the skin. The new skin that appears is pink at first, but gradually develops a normal appearance. Most patients heal within one to two weeks. It’s important for patients to wear a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher to protect their fresh, new skin.
