U.S. Navy Veteran Finds New Path in Dermatology
Joshua Holcombe, PA-C joined Contour Dermatology in December 2022. A native of Fort Collins, Colorado, Josh initially pursued a degree in history but decided to join the navy during college. He completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees through the navy, earning his bachelor’s degree in science and his master’s in physician assistant studies from the University of Nebraska-Interservice Physician Assistant Program in San Antonio, Texas.
A tour of duty brought Josh and his family to Twentynine Palms, where he worked as a primary care physician assistant at Robert E. Bush Naval Hospital, caring for Marines, Sailors, and their families. After this tour, he decided to stay in the desert and retired from military service, ranked as a lieutenant, having received several commendation and achievement medals. Before the Twentynine Palms tour, Josh was stationed in Washington, D.C., San Diego, California, San Antonio, Texas, and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Immediately before joining Contour, he worked as a physician assistant in La Quinta.
It was during his experience in naval special warfare that Joshua became interested in medicine. “What I was seeing with the combat trauma aspects led me to want to work with medicine,” he said.
His first exposure to dermatology came as a PA student, working in clinical rotations. It was during these rotations that he first enjoyed dermatology and interacting with patients. “I feel like you get more connection in dermatology than you might with other specialties. On the medical side, I appreciate the complexity of the pathology, the disease process, and the solutions to the condition,” he said. Josh’s initial training with Botox was for medical conditions – injecting it to help PTSD, TBI, and migraine patients. “That’s what opened the door and led me down this path into dermatology and aesthetics,” he explained.
“I like the experience of working through problems,” he said. “I’m a problem solver, that’s my personality, and you can use this approach to work with people and individual experiences in dermatology to find a solution. And with Contour I look forward to solving and treating dermatologic problems, as well as providing cosmetic services to patients.”
Josh is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants.
Josh and his wife, Coryna, live in Palm Desert with their two young sons. He enjoys hiking, camping, and skiing with his family when there are breaks in his older son’s sports schedule.
