As you prepare to set your clocks ahead an hour before you go to bed Saturday night, have you thought about the repercussions of the act? The practice of Daylight Saving Time is great for farmers and sporting events, but what is it doing to your skin? You would be surprised at what this hour will do to your face!

What happens when you lose sleep, is your body produces a stress hormone called cortisol. The heightened levels of cortisol lead to inflammation of the skin and higher stress levels. Both of which hurt your skin’s quality. Sadly, this is a viscous cycle because the stress levels can mess up your sleep leading to more cortisol. What will this actually do to your skin? Let me tell you:

If you already have a skin condition, lack of sleep can worsen it. Anything from acne to skin sensitivity to allergic reactions. When your skin conditions worsen, you have to go to a dermatologist more often to treat the problems.

Sleeping gives your skin a natural glow, bounce, and translucency. When you don’t get enough of it, you wake up to increased inflammation and a breakdown of collagen.

Beauty Sleep is a real thing! While you’re sleeping, hydration levels in your body balances out. When you don’t get enough sleep, your water levels are off balance which gives you puffy bags under your eyes, under-eye circles, dry skin, and wrinkles.

You age faster when you don’t sleep enough. Damaged cells are repaired and growth hormones develop during deep sleep. If you don’t enter deep sleep, these repairs cannot occur. This shows as you age, and the aging process will go faster if those cells aren’t repaired while you sleep.

Lastly, sleep helps in weight management. After a full night’s sleep, you feel less hungry the next day. This obviously, cuts your calorie intake. If you’re too tired, you need the snacks and extra food just for the energy.

With all these terrible side effects from lack of sleep I believe we all have two options:

  1. Move somewhere that does not participate in Daylight Saving Time
  2. When this weekend leaves you tired, inflamed, breaking out, collagen lacking, puffy eyed, wrinkled, showing your age, and a few pounds heavier, come to Contour Dermatology where we can fix all these problems! Luckily for you, now you can come an hour earlier than you would before the time change!
