Activate Clear, Healthy Skin with Our Proven Acne Treatments

Over 80 percent of teens will experience some form of acne, and it can reappear into adulthood. I empathize with young people and adults over the emotional and physical aspects this visible skin condition creates. Treating people with acne and acne scarring is rewarding, and seeing patients achieve clear skin with a renewed sense of self-esteem is a joy.

Types of Acne

Acne can be mild, moderate, or severe, and the type determines the treatment. Lesions include whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, nodules, cysts, fungal acne, and hormonal acne. My first step is to stop the inflammation and get the acne under control. I provide patients with specialized treatments for their condition. For moderate to severe acne, I typically recommend Accutane, a proven therapy that requires a short course but has long-lasting results. Retin A can be helpful for mild to moderate acne as it speeds up skin cell turnover, stimulates collagen, and removes dead skin cells. Hydroquinone evens out skin tone by suppressing melanin production and maintaining our natural tone.

acne Treatments - Oral and Physical Options Available

Timothy Jochen, MD

There are other oral and topical prescriptions I may recommend. Sarecycline is a tetracycline-derived antibiotic approved by the FDA to treat acne in patients 9 years and older. It targets Cutibacterium acnes with an anti-inflammatory formula. Certain lasers target the sebaceous glands to reduce breakouts, and blue light therapy kills bacteria. Once the acne is controlled, I deal with any resulting scars.

I have had great success with chemical peel treatments, including the Beta Lift for patients with acne and oily skin. Salicylic Acid peel is a superficial chemical peel that exfoliates dead and dull cells from the skin’s surface, stimulating renewal and bringing new, healthy skin to the surface.

Cutting Edge Laser Treatments For Acne:

  • The SmoothBeam Laser targets and controls the sebaceous gland, the root cause of acne, and softens scars.
  • Sublative Radio Frequency is the only technology proven to reduce acne scars safely and effectively on all skin tones with minimal downtime or side effects.
  • Fraxel Lasers treat a fraction of skin at a time with thousands of tiny laser beams, leaving surrounding tissue unaffected to heal quicker.
  • ElosTM Laser Acne Treatment uses a new AC Applicator (AC stands for “acne clearance”) with a specific spectrum of light targeting the bacteria causing acne.

Combination Treatments Work Best

I understand that patients may be embarrassed by perceived scars left after acne treatments. Pigmentation after an acne lesion is common in darker skin and is often confused as a “scar.” Hyperpigmentation does not have texture; it only has discoloration, and treatment is fairly non-invasive. Acne scar treatments range from lasers and minor surgical procedures to dermal fillers, chemical peels, and dermabrasion. Usually, I combine technologies to deliver the best results.

Effective Acne Scar Treatments:

  • Fractional CO2 Laser
  • Fraxel Laser
  • Smoothbeam/Excel V Lasers
  • Dermaroller
  • Vibradermabrasion
  • TCA Chemical Peel
  • Injectable Dermal Fillers
  • Subcison
  • Punch Elevation
  • Punch Graft
