What Is an FUT Hair Transplant?

The Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) breaks down a strip of healthy hair, usually from the back of your scalp, into thousands of smaller “units” — groups of one to four hairs. These units can then be transplanted elsewhere, such as at the front of the hairline or sides of the head, to restore lost volume or fill in bald spots. Because each unit is about the size of a needle, they can be placed almost anywhere and heal rapidly without leaving any marks behind.

During the procedure, we will give you a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. Your surgeon will carefully harvest a small strip of your scalp from a predetermined spot. Using one of our specialized microscopes, we will carefully place every graft to maximize coverage while maintaining a natural appearance and avoiding follicle damage.

The Benefits of FUT Surgery

Many people choose to pursue FUT for their pattern baldness or hair thinning because it is one of the most effective hair transplant options available. It can cover large areas in need without noticeable scarring, and once you’ve recovered, little maintenance is required.

After treatment, you may be asked to wear a pressure dressing for a few days, but you’ll be able to return to most normal activities the next day. Your stitches will be removed in about a week, and you’ll need to avoid strenuous activity for about three weeks. Some patients notice their new hair falling out about six weeks after the surgery, but this is temporary and normal. You can expect to see half an inch of hair growth per month after this initial hair fall period.

While one appointment is enough for many people to get the results they want, others may need to undergo two or three treatments to reach their desired appearance. Whatever your needs, Contour Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery Center will help you through every step.
