Hyaluronic acid fillers have become popular over the past several years. They have modernize the cosmetic market with many new options to choose from. Dr. Jochen of Contour Dermatology loves this treatment option to help people look younger with simple dermal fillers. We are proud to say that, Contour Dermatology is in the top 1% of dermal filler injectors as well as the top 1% of Botox injectors out of more than 7,200 injectors in the in the nation. Dr. Jochen’s expertise in facial rejuvenation started back in his residency at Tulane University in New Orleans in the 1990s where he was trained with one of the top injectors of autologous fat transfer. Dr. Jochen loved the amazing transformation that is possible by restoring volume to a person’s face.
The vast amount of hyaluronic acid fillers available today today are even better than the traditional fat injections and have more predictable results. There’s never been a more natural looking way and time to stay younger looking than right now! When looking for a provider for your needs it is not only to find someone who is well experienced, it is equally important to select an injector who has an artistic eye. The following is not only Dr. Jochen’s approach to facial fillers but also some of the mistakes he has seen in the cosmetic industry:
Under filling – Lack of 3-D Evaluation
The most common mistake when using facial fillers is not injecting the entire face. As humans, we are three-dimensional beings. It’s not just how you look when you look at yourself in the mirror, your profile also matters when someone looks at you from the side. When our practice evaluates our patients features we take into account all angles of your face when determining the areas for injection. This will help you look more natural after the treatment takes place.
One of the most remarkable areas for improvement is the tear trough underneath the eyes. The hollowness that comes with age can be dramatically restored. Many times once this area is filled it can help improve the appearance of dark circles. However, too much filler in this area can be much worse than no filler at all. Because when injected with too much filler in the cheek area it can be a telltale sign that someone has had work done. Our goal is to make each patient leave our office looking refreshed not over-filled.
Too Much Filler in the Lower Third of the Face
When we are young, we enjoy what scientists call the triangle of youth. Unfortunately, when we age, this triangle inverts and becomes the pyramid of age.
You’ve heard the saying “everything goes south with age.” Many cosmetic injectors believe it is important to fill those wrinkles and folds that have become more prominent over time; however this is not the right technique. For when too much filler or by only filling the lower third of the face, you will actually create the opposite effect. Think of lifting the face rather than filling. By over filling the lower face it can masculinize a woman’s face and make the face appear droopy or heavier, drawing attention away from the eyes.
I’m sure most of you have read about the unsuccessful results of liquid silicone, a permanent filler which lead to monkey-like lips in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Dr. Jochen prefers to take a more conservative approach to lip filling and fill not just the lips but around the lips – this will effectively reduce lipstick lines, restore deflation and correct the downturn of the outer commissures – all with a goal of looking natural and proportional. By being honest with our patients about the importance of realistic plumping of the lips we can achieve beautiful natural looking results.
Many times we have new patients coming into our practice who has had filler elsewhere and is not satisfied, if the problem is asymmetry, this is usually corrected either by adding filler or dissolving a hyaluronic acid filler with the enzyme hyaluronidase, which can be used even months after initial injection. This is one of the best reasons to choose a hyaluronic acid when choosing which filler is right for you, since you can melt it if you don’t like it.
“The goal with any type of facial filler should always be balance and harmony. I want patients to look refreshed and natural – better, but not different.”
