Truth: Any form of tanning is detrimental. Tans signal melanin stimulation, a natural defense mechanism, protecting your body against harmful sun rays, indicating potential tissue damage. At Contour Dermatology, we advocate maintaining natural skin tones and ensuring optimal skin health.

Truth: Clouds do not block the damaging UVA and UVB rays. These harmful rays can still penetrate, causing skin damage, especially as we tend to stay outdoors longer during overcast weather.

Truth: The risk from UVA and UVB rays persists regardless of the season. The reflective properties of snow can even intensify exposure. Always keep your sunscreen handy, especially during ski/snow trips, and when at higher elevations.

Truth: Umbrellas, while providing shade, do not offer complete protection against UVA or UVB rays. Reflections from surfaces like sand can also expose your skin to these rays.

Truth: Several sunscreens cater to sensitive skin, formulated with zinc and titanium, which are not absorbed by the skin, thus reducing irritation risk. Infant and children’s sunscreens are developed with gentler formulas.

Truth: Very few makeup lines endorsed by the Skin Cancer Foundation offer adequate sun protection, and reapplication is crucial. Not all skincare products contain sunscreen. Ensure your products have an adequate SPF rating.

Truth: A tan is your body’s defense against UVA and UVB rays and is not recommended. It may prevent burning, but the damage still occurs, leading to premature aging and collagen breakdown.
