Understanding Benign Skin Growths: Seborrheic Keratoses and Skin Tags

SEBHORRHEIC KERATOSES AND SKIN TAGS

Two of the more common skin conditions that crop up are seborrheic keratosis and skin tags

Common, But Often Misunderstood

Seborrheic keratoses and skin tags are two of the most common benign skin growths we see at Contour Dermatology. While they are harmless, they can be bothersome or cause cosmetic concerns for many people. It’s important to understand what these growths are and how they differ, so you can make informed decisions about any treatment options you may be considering.

Seborrheic Keratoses: The "Stuck-On" Appearance

Seborrheic keratoses often appear as brown, black, or tan growths with a waxy, “stuck-on” look. They typically develop on the face, chest, back, or shoulders and are more common with age. While their exact cause is unknown, genetics and sun exposure may play a role. Although they can sometimes resemble warts or moles, seborrheic keratoses are not contagious and are not caused by a virus.
