For those of you who don’t know, a dermaroller is a hand held device with a wheel on one side covered in microscopic needles. When rolled along the skin, the needles puncture making hundreds of tiny holes. So why on earth would a dermatologist suggest that you use what appears to be a medieval torture device on your face? I’ll tell you.
Dermarollers are used in a procedure known as microneedling which is the use of small needles to cause punctures in the skin for therapeutic purposes. This naturally stimulates collagen and elastin production. Since the needles are so small, they only puncture through to the dermis and will not remove the outer layer of the skin.
What would you use the dermaroller for:
- Fine Lines
- Sagging Skin
- Dull Skin
How can microneedling help so many conditions? By puncturing tiny holes on the face, the skin goes through natural healing process and produces more collagen. Acne scars, stretch marks, and other skin issues will be minimized as the skin heals around it.
A typical procedure takes just a few minutes. You will have numbing solution on your face for at least 30 minutes beforehand. This can be applied when you get to the office, or you can be given some to apply at home before you head over. Then the dermaroller will be rolled over the troubled areas of the skin until slight bleeding occurs. There is no downtime with this procedure. You’ll just have some mild skin redness for a few days as your skin heals.
While there are many dermarollers on the market that you can buy and use from home, I would suggest that you still make an appointment with Contour Dermatology to have one of our providers do the procedure for you. Although it is a safe procedure, it’s better to have someone with experience taking control. You wouldn’t want to put too many puncture marks that will injure you, or put too few puncture marks that won’t give you the results you want to see. Also, we want to make sure the skin is properly healed before going through with another treatment.
As you heal you’ll see a more even skin texture and watch your scars and lines fade away. For best results, we suggest you have multiple dermaroller treatments. When you come in, we will have a consultation with you about what areas of concern we should focus on and about how many treatments we suggest.
