What causes female hair loss?
Learn what factors cause hair loss in women
As a woman suffering from hair loss you may feel like the minority forced to suffer in silence, but actually, nearly half of Americans dealing with hair loss are woman. Here at Contour Dermatology we understand how difficult it can be and we want to help you look and feel your best.
1. Physical Stress.
There are many reasons why a woman could have problems with hair growth. A very common, and the least concerning one, is physical stress. Any physical stress or trauma such as a car accident, surgery, severe illness, or even childbirth, could trigger a cycle of losing hair. This normally happens three to six months after the trauma happens. If you notice a slight thinning of hair, but know you just underwent physical trauma, give it a little bit of time before you get concerned. We’ve all heard that emotional stress can cause hair loss, but that isn’t the case. It is true that emotional stress, such as the death of a loved one, losing a job, caring for a family member, or divorce, can go hand in hand with hair loss, but the stress is not the cause of the problem. Normally in situations like this there’s another problem damaging your hair growth and the stress is just magnifying it. Schedule an appointment with your doctor to see what could be causing the initial hair loss.
2. Dietary Imbalance
There are a few diet reasons your hair could be falling out such as too much Vitamin A, too little protein, or a Vitamin B deficiency. This can be easily fixed simply by improving your diet. Taking daily vitamins and making sure you are eating healthy protein such as lean meats, fish, and eggs will fix the problem. When you aren’t getting enough protein, your body steals it from your hair to distribute. Luckily with diet related hair loss, as soon as the diet is corrected your hair will start to grow normally again.
3. Sudden Weight loss
Another diet related cause of hair loss is dramatic weight loss. The reason weight loss can cause your hair to thin is because dramatic weight loss can be a physical strain and normally goes hand in hand with nutrient deficiencies as you follow strict diets. It’s a cruel trick of the body that achieving weight loss goals can trigger hair loss in turn, but just make sure you’re following the previous advice about vitamins and protein. If you don’t see a change very soon, visit your doctor about other options.
4. Medical Issues
Medical reasons, of course, play a big factor in hair loss and aren’t as easy to fix. Medications such as beta blockers, methotrexate, lithium, anti-inflammatory drugs, and even antidepressants could side effects that promote hair loss. Talk to your doctor about lowering your dose or switching medications. Lupus, and other autoimmune diseases, also causes hair loss because your immune cells attack the hair in a permanent way. You might consider getting your thyroid levels checked because hypothyroidism is known to throw off hair growth. Anemia is another cause and can be checked with a very simple blood test and fixed just as easily with an iron supplement.
